While I really enjoyed the three book series The Hunger Games, I am embarrassed to admit that I had never seen any of the movies. When Marissa of Rae Gun Ramblings announced her Happy Hunger Games series coming up I took that as the perfect excuse to watch the first two films.
Before watching the movies, I had an idea of what I wanted to make for the series and it was only confirmed after viewing. The cowl that Katniss wears in the Catching Fire movie is just how I imagined it would be: one shouldered, oversized, and chunky. I was compelled to make one for Bean.
I found a great free pattern on Ravelry (if you are into knitting or crochet and aren't on Ravelry yet, you're missing out!) for the perfect cowl. It's by LollyKnits and she calls it the Huntress Cowl. Since her pattern was meant for adults, I just sized it down and took a chance on measurements for Bean.
I am so in love with how it turned out. The yarn is Thick and Quick Chunky by Lion Brand in the Constellation colorway. The gist of the pattern is to knit two flat triangles in herringbone stitch, then make two rope loops covered with yarn, crochet the loops together, and then knit a few rows of herringbone in the round. Once you have the now double loop simply sew your flat triangles to the loop and pin the triangles together under the arm. I used a big chunky pin, imagining Katniss wouldn't have had a lot of style options.
Bean was very excited to wear it. She doesn't even know who Katniss is, but she kept saying the cowl was cool. It also looked strangely cozy and warm while she wore it. I waited for the rain once I saw the forecast and I love how these pictures turned out. It's not quite as dystopian as I envisioned with the brightness of all those leaves in the background, but with her hair a bit wet, the boarded up window well, and the grey of the concrete I think some of that comes through, hehe. Plus it was really fun playing out in the rain for awhile. We don't do that enough, I think.
